BRIAN

I don’t know what I did. I said hi to an old friend. How was I to know Cortney worked there? She didn’t the last time I saw her.

The whole way to Bella’s house, I felt my heart breaking. I know it’s not just me. I can feel her emotions as if they are my own. I felt her anger when she witnessed Cortney giving me her number. I didn’t keep it. I purposely tossed it on the table, not wanting to accidentally put it in my pocket and forget about it. Not needing another reason for the love of my life to be mad at me.

I really fucked up. How do I fix this? I pull up around the corner from her house. She jumps off like she was dying to be rid of me. Rips the helmet off and shoves it into my arms. “Thank you for the ride home.”

“Bella, wait!” I call out.

She runs, literally runs, away from me.

…broke my heart.

What? That was weird. It’s like a stray thought passed through my head, but it wasn’t mine. Worse, it sounded like Bella.

I drive down the street, seeing the door to her house close as I get closer. Knowing she’s home and safe, I speed off down the street until I get to my house.

I park in the garage, knowing we’re in for snow, and knowing my bike won’t last in it. Without realizing it, I slam the door that leads to the garage, rattling the pictures on the wall beside it.

“Hey! Everything okay, sweetie?”

My parents are home. Must have made it home alive. Thanks for the update. I roll my eyes. “Yeah, Mom. I’m good. Sorry.”

I don’t shout; the house is small enough that my voice makes it to her in the kitchen. I don’t wait for her to say anything else. I race upstairs and close my door, softer this time. I flop on my bed and stare up at the night sky on my ceiling. I painted it a midnight blue and added little yellow specks to look like faraway stars.

The walls are a lighter color blue but dark enough to make me feel like I’m sleeping beneath the night sky.

I dig my phone out of my pocket.

Me: I’m sorry. Please talk to me.

She doesn’t respond. I didn’t really expect her to. Am I too nice? Is that why she thought I was being too friendly with Cortney? I didn’t think I was. But I’m not a girl. I don’t know how their minds work.

Reluctantly, I get up. I leave my phone on the bed, not wanting to risk messaging her again and again.

I make more noise than I should, than I ever had, walking into the kitchen. Mom stops cooking and turns to me. “What’s wrong?”

“Girls.” I lay my head on my folded arms before me at the table.

Mom snorts. “Son, you are going to have to be more specific than that.”

I pick my head up and talk so it’s not muffled. “I started seeing this girl.
